You may already have a favourite from the Original Pipe Collection or Foundry Collection, but need to discuss the size, finish or arrangement. Or you may be starting with an unusual space and an idea for a one-off piece. Explain what you want the light to do, where it will sit or hang, and which details matter to you.
Reclaimed timber and industrial metalwork are central to the Hewn & Iron approach. Natural grain, marks and colour variations are part of the material’s character. A reference image can help communicate a mood or proportion, while the design and feasibility of your own piece are considered separately.
What can be discussed?
- Scale and proportions: the height or footprint of a table lamp, or the span and drop of a ceiling fitting.
- Timber and finish: the tone you prefer and how the piece relates to the materials in your room.
- Lighting arrangement: the shape, number and position of light sources, considered alongside the practical specification.
- The setting: a home, workspace or hospitality interior, including quantities and how several pieces will work together.
These are starting points for a conversation, rather than a promise that every change is suitable. Construction, component availability, weight, installation and electrical requirements can all influence the finished design.
From your brief to an agreed design.
Describe the setting
Send measurements, photographs or a sketch, your preferred finish, budget and timescale. Include the delivery postcode and whether you are considering a plug-in lamp or a ceiling fitting.
Agree the details
Discuss the design, dimensions, materials, suitable components and installation requirements. The quotation, delivery charge and estimated lead time are confirmed for your particular commission before payment.
Make your piece
Once the specification and order are agreed, the piece is made for that brief. Keep the confirmed dimensions, finish and installation information to hand when planning its place in the room.
Preparing a useful brief
For a table lamp, include the available surface area, surrounding furniture and any limit on height. For a pendant, include ceiling height, the table or counter below and your preferred overall span. Photographs taken from a few angles can explain the space more clearly than measurements alone.
Tell us about access, quantities and any project deadline at the start. If a designer or installer is involved, share the relevant specification or drawings so requirements can be discussed together. Our guide to commissioning bespoke lighting offers a practical checklist.
Pricing, timing and installation
Bespoke work is individually quoted. There is no fixed starting price or guaranteed production window. Collection delivery estimates do not automatically apply to custom commissions: design, materials, quantities and delivery requirements affect the agreed lead time.
The finished specification and installation details need to be confirmed for the particular piece. Fixed ceiling lighting should be installed by a qualified electrician using fixings suitable for the actual ceiling. Do not assume a fitting is suitable for outdoor, bathroom or damp-area use; discuss the setting before agreeing the design.
