A Practical Guide to Commissioning Bespoke Lighting

Prepare a clear brief for a bespoke industrial light: dimensions, materials, finishes, installation details, budget and delivery programme.

Describe what the piece needs to do

A useful bespoke brief begins with the room and the task. Is the light a focal point over a dining table, an accent on a console or part of a hospitality refurbishment? Include the surface it sits on or hangs above, the available space and the other lighting already in the room. A sketch and a few measurements are more helpful than a long list of style words.

Choose a starting design

Starting from the Original Pipe Collection or Foundry Collection makes it easier to explain a variation. For example, the standard Workshop is approximately 250 mm high; the Beacon is approximately 450 mm high. If you like one outline but need different proportions, explain which features you want to retain. Custom feasibility and price still need to be agreed individually.

For ceiling lighting, the Duet, Forge and Gantry offer different spans and material combinations. The Gantry has a reclaimed timber beam, while the Forge is an iron bar without timber. Naming the closest design helps keep the conversation focused on the changes your space actually needs.

Separate dimensions from preferences

Identify which measurements are essential and which are flexible. Include the maximum footprint for a table lamp or the intended position, ceiling height and surface dimensions for a pendant. Mention shelves, doors, walkways or other constraints that may affect the design. Standard catalogue dimensions are approximate; any exact requirement must be agreed before an order is accepted.

List your preferred finish alongside the dimensions. Original Pipe timber finishes are Natural, Dark Oak and Weathered. The Gantry and Cantilever list Natural Oak, Dark Walnut and Charred Black. Reclaimed timber will still vary in grain, tone and marks, so a finish choice does not guarantee an identical surface to a concept image.

Discuss installation and documentation early

Tell us whether you need a plug-in lamp or fixed ceiling lighting. For fixed lighting, involve your electrician before finalising the specification. Include any known ceiling constraints, required suspension arrangement and project documentation requirements. Compatibility, electrical ratings and installation details must be confirmed for the finished product; do not infer them from a drawing or a list of components.

Include a budget and a realistic programme

Share your budget, quantity, delivery postcode and preferred date at the start. This lets the quotation address the whole request, including delivery and any access restrictions. The usual 8–14 day delivery period for collection products is not a guarantee for bespoke work or larger quantities. Bespoke prices, payment arrangements and estimated timings are agreed for the individual commission.

Review the agreed specification

Before payment, check the final design, dimensions, finish, supplied bulbs, installation information, full price, delivery charge and estimated date. Keep a copy of the agreed specification. If something changes later, discuss its effect on cost and timing before proceeding.
