Choosing Pendant Size Over a Dining Table

Compare pendant widths, table proportions and ceiling drops using the Hewn & Iron Foundry range before you decide on a fitting.

Begin with the table, not the photograph

Measure the length and width of your table, including the way you normally extend it. Then record the ceiling height and where the electrical connection sits. A pendant that looks balanced in a product image can feel quite different over a narrow table or beneath a low ceiling. The dimensions below are a starting point for a conversation, rather than a promise that a particular fitting will suit every room.

Compare three different spans

The Duet has an approximately 550 mm black iron crossbar and two hanging lamps. The Forge uses an approximately 700 mm bar with three exposed lamps. The Gantry has an approximately 900 mm reclaimed timber beam and three hanging lamps. The Gantry also introduces more material and visual weight; its timber beam will read differently from an open iron bar of a similar length.

Mark each candidate width on a sheet of paper or a length of removable tape laid on the table. View it from the doorway and from seated positions. This simple comparison is more useful than choosing by bulb count alone. Allow for the whole fitting, including shades and any projecting details, when agreeing final dimensions.

Consider how people use the space

A dining pendant should work with conversation and sightlines across the table. Check what you see while sitting down and when approaching the table. An open-plan room may also need a clear view towards a window, kitchen or living area. If the table moves, or you expect to change its position, discuss that before fixing the ceiling location.

The Sentry offers a different approach: a single factory-inspired shade approximately 300 mm in diameter. For a scheme with several separate pendants, include their proposed positions and quantities in your enquiry so the layout can be considered as a whole.

Agree the drop before ordering

Several Foundry designs have an adjustable drop, but the finished range and suspension arrangement need to be confirmed for the actual order. Share both the ceiling height and the height of the surface below. Your electrician should confirm the mounting position, fixing method and suitability of the ceiling for the finished fitting. Avoid arranging installation around an unconfirmed delivery date.

Choose the atmosphere as well as the shape

Exposed bulbs and shaded lamps have different visual effects. Product images illustrate the design and are labelled as concept visualisations; they are not a measurement of light output. Ask for the supplied bulb specification, colour temperature and dimmer compatibility for the finished piece. Decorative light over a table may also need to work alongside other lighting in the room.
