How to Choose Industrial Lighting for a Kitchen

Balance the shape of your lighting with the room’s practical needs before choosing a statement piece.

Start with the work surfaces.

A decorative fitting can provide a focal point, but it should not be your only consideration for cooking and preparation areas. Think about where shadows fall and discuss task lighting separately from the atmosphere you want over an island or dining table.

Match the form to the space.

A horizontal beam pendant follows the shape of a long table or island. A table lamp can add warmth on a suitable dry surface outside preparation and splash zones. Check the actual dimensions instead of judging scale from a photograph.

Plan the installation first.

For a pendant, measure ceiling height and the surface beneath it. Confirm the suspension range, final weight and fixing requirements with the maker and a qualified electrician. There is no one hanging height that works for every ceiling, fitting and household.

Choose bulbs after confirming the specification.

Light output, colour temperature and dimmer compatibility depend on the bulb and fitting. Do not infer brightness from a warm product photograph or the number of shades.
